The clouds parted and the Horrors (and friends) braved the searing temperatures for a spectacular scrimmage in the sun!

Roller derby is a team sport in every sense of the word.
It’s an environment that fosters camaraderie and bonding among women.
We truly are a family, and we do so much more than just skate!
We are active in our community and support numerous charities.
We also have a junior league that builds confidence, character, and teamwork skills for young people.
Being a Horror is one of the best experiences you can have.

Guys, did you know you can get involved too?
While skating in the WFTDA is only for woman-identified folks, men can be referees!
Come train with us and learn this vitally important and desperately needed skill!

The Hudson Valley Horrors are on a roll! Be a part of it!

Draculadies won the day! Frightmares won our hearts!

Both teams skated fast and furious, but in the end, the Draculadies bested the Apocalips 184 to 130!
Not to worry though. There will be plenty of time for the Apocalips practice hard before the rematch on November 11th.
Will the Apocalips win back the turf and bragging rights? Make sure you come out in November and see this grudge match go down!

Here’s some of the manic derby action from Sunday (Photos by Clark Thompson)…

About Our Featured Charity

Grace Smith House “An open door for victims of domestic violence.”

Grace Smith House Logo

A portion of the proceeds from this bout will go to raise funds and collect goods for the Grace Smith House. We selected this organization because of their mission to empower victims of domestic violence. Roller derby is about empowerment and we cannot think of a more empowering goal than putting a stop to violence. Take a moment to explore more about our charity and learn what kind of work is happening in our communities.

The mission of Grace Smith House, Inc. is to enable women and their children to live free from domestic violence through:

  • Providing shelter and apartments, advocacy, counseling and education
  • Raising the consciousness of the community regarding the extent, type and seriousness of domestic violence.
  • Initiating and taking positions on public policies in order to provide options, which empower victims of domestic violence.

Grace Smith House is a private not-for-profit domestic violence agency, which provides both residential and non-residential services to victims of domestic violence and their children.

In the late 1970′s, when the idea for the Grace Smith House shelter was born, no one envisioned that our organization would serve over 2,500 families in flight from their personal domestic violence horror each year. Today, Grace Smith House has grown from one crisis shelter at its inception in 1981, to two shelters, one second stage housing and our Follow-up and Non-Residential programs. Our programs provide Adult & Child counseling, Family Court advocacy, Child Protective Services, Social Services advocacy, Life Skills training, continuing Support Groups and education about domestic violence.

While we are pleased to have served and aided so many families and individuals, there is still so much more that can be done to attain our ultimate goal of “enabling women and children to live free from domestic violence”.

Besides providing a safe place, where the victims can start their healing process and work towards leading lives free from violence, our mission is to educate the community about the extent, type and seriousness of domestic violence and to initiate a public policy in order to provide options that empower victims of domestic violence.” (www.gracesmithhouse.org/about-us)

Visit their website at www.gracesmithhouse.org for more information and ways to get involved.

Pinky Swears Skating in the Roller Derby World Cup!

Hudson Valley Horrors roller derby is proud to announce our very own, Pinky Swears, will be skating with Team Portugal in this year’s Roller Derby World Cup!

Team Portugal Roller Derby roster with Hudson Valley Horrors skater Pinky Swears

Pinky Swears, #2, is HVHRD’s very own league President, co-owner, travel team Captain, coach, mentor, and a long time veteran skater. Dec. 4-7th, Pinky will meet up with skaters from around the world, in Dallas, Texas.

When Pinky realized her Portuguese citizenship could make her eligible to tryout for Team Portugal, she was more than thrilled and is incredibly honored to be part of something as big as the Roller Derby World Cup.

Pinky and Team Portugal need your help, as flying the team from Portugal to the U.S. for the cup is expensive. The skaters have already been traveling extensively to practice together and every contribution helps.

Please support Team Portugal as they compete against the top competitors (and HVHRD’s own Pinky Swears) in the world by donating here.

Food Bank Mission

The mission of the Food Bank of the Hudson Valley is to alleviate hunger and prevent food waste. At this bout we will also be collecting donations at the door. Please bring non-perishable goods to support the food bank this holiday season! Please check the food bank website to see what items can be donated!
