What You’ve Missed

The Hudson Valley Horrors have been pretty busy lately! The league have been cleaning up highways, hosting penny socials, scrimmaging, and much much more. Let’s catch you up, shall we!

Our last home bout was an exciting match up, where our very own DracuLadies faced (our other very own) ApocaLips! In June, Hyde Park Roller Magic was crawling with fans and part of the proceeds from the bout went to Dutchess County Stop DWI. People laughed, cheered and drank beer and cider from Bad Seed Cider Co in Highland. ApocaLips took the victory, but DracuLadies didn’t come out empty handed. Their MVPs took the award in stride and thanked ApocaLips for showing them such a great time. We’re sure both teams are shaking in antici…pation for the next time they can bout together. A special thanks to Storm Jenarator for being our bout manager! We couldn’t have done it without you!

An ApocaLip coming around turn 3 during a match up between the Horrors home teams

Following the match at home, HVHRD traveled a few hours to our state’s capitol to face the Albany AllStars B Team, the Brawl Stars. With the help of Ruby RedRum, HVHRD fought their hearts out against Albany keeping up a consistent lead right up until the end of the last few jams. In the end, Albany came out victorious. But HVHRD was not far behind them. Until next time, Brawl Stars. We can’t wait to meet again!

The Horrors and Albany AllStars MVPs pose after a close match up

When they’re not skating, HVHRD has been donating their time to the community. They love showing off their skills at the Hyde Park Car Show, picking up trash on Route 9, and donating to local charities such as Dutchess County Stop DWI. The more we can do to help out, the better! In the upcoming months, HVHRD will be doing even more to show off not just their derby abilities, but their philanthropy skills as well!

And that’s what you missed on HVHRD!

Say hello to our new tender meat, #11, Prudence N. Paine. You can see her play at our home bout against Jerzey Derby Brigade on November 5. Buy your tickets now!

Why derby?

I found out about it when I was 14 and have wanted to do it since then. After graduating from college, I finally had the time.

Who do you think will be your biggest fan?

Probably my mom.

What do you love most about derby?

I love the community. The vets help you learn even the most basic skills and they keep working with you until you’ve got it. And we do so much outside of practice—it’s way more than just a sport.

What has been the biggest challenge for you?

Not being afraid to fall. Sometimes I won’t fully commit to something I’m doing—like changing directions or making contact with another player—because I’m viscerally afraid of falling.

What has surprised you most about derby?

I’ve been surprised by how involved we are in volunteer work and other community events. I knew before joining that that was a part of derby, but I didn’t realize just how much of it we do.

Do you have a battle song? Something that helps charge you up?

I have a long drive to get to practice and most of that is spent listening to the same few songs over and over again to get ready. I have a different song stuck in my head at every practice. Last week, it was the Years & Years cover of “Breathe” which was surprisingly good at keeping me motivated.

Tenderized: Poutine Riot

new tender meat Poutine Riot

Say hello to our new tender meat, #1855, Poutine Riot. You can see her play at our home bout against Jerzey Derby Brigade on November 5. Buy your tickets now!

What made you decide to take up derby?

I fell in love with derby when I saw my first bout in 2007 and after many years of following derby–literally going to the after parties and people asking me who I skated for–I had an epiphany: I never again wanted to say, “I don’t skate. I just watch.” So now I skate.

How did you decide on your name?

My first choice was Phantom Power, but that name is taken (and I saw her skate at champs last year, and she was great). I chose Poutine Riot because I wanted to touch on my Canadian roots, and I love poutine. The riot is just thrown in there for fun. 1855, my number, is the name of my favourite Canadian micro brew, and also the year of the founding of Ottawa.

Did you do any sports before derby?

I run, bike, and swim. The last time I participated in a team sport was soccer in grade 7, approximately 25,000 years ago. Seriously. We had to clear mammoth droppings off the field before each game.

What’s been the hardest skill for you to learn?

How to transition [turn around on skates] gracefully.

What are you most proud of?

Coming back to my second practice after realizing at my first practice that I had absolutely no natural talent for skating and that it was going to take a tonne of work.

What’s something a lot of people don’t know about you?

I was once escorted out of a country club in Ontario on the back of a golf cart. It was the nicest place I’ve been kicked out of (so far).

Top 10 things NOT to say to your Roller Derby Coach

A roller derby skaters popping a wheelie 1.       When is practice over?  or It’s time for practice to end.  These statements indicate you would rather be somewhere else.  If you would rather be somewhere else, maybe you should be there instead.  Your coaches take the time to prepare practice and often give up time in their busy lives to teach you. Your progress and skills improvement is something that they take seriously. You should be focused on what is being taught, not watching the clock.

2.       I don’t get it. This is a terrible and unintelligent question.   Be specific about what you don’t understand.  Do you need to the demo again? Do you need the breakdown of the skill into basic parts?  Do you not understand the correction?  Be specific and your coach will be more than happy to help you.

3.       Am I doing this right? If you were doing it wrong, your coach would tell you.

4.       Watch me. The coach is trying to watch all the skaters in her group.  She will watch you all equally and yes, some of your best moments may be missed.  Take pride in knowing you did them well even if there were no witnesses.

5.       When can I move up? or When do I get to play? When your coach thinks you are ready, she will let you know.   These questions are not going to make your coaches look at you and say, ‘Oh my goodness, I totally forgot.  I meant to do that three weeks ago!  Thanks for reminding me!’  You’re more likely to get, ‘When you have mastered your basic skills.’

6.       What do I need to work on? Many skaters and parents think this is a great question to ask and it makes most coaches cringe.  You should know exactly what you need to work on if you are paying attention. Being reminded not to slam down on your controlled falls? Perhaps that is an area you need to improve on. You should know the corrections you get often and the general corrections given for the entire groups benefit.  A much better conversation would be, ‘These are the things I think I really need to work on.  Am I on the right track?  Can you give me any pointers on how to improve in those areas?’

7.       Can we do ______ today? Fill in the blank.  So this is a hard one for a coach to deal with.  We certainly don’t want to squelch your enthusiasm, but we do not appreciate being treated like a call-in-request radio show either.  The best coaches come in with a very clear agenda and lesson plan of what they would like to cover during practice.  A better way would be to come to the coach after practice and say something like, ‘I’m worried about passing plow stops on my skills test.  Could you maybe work on those sometime at practice or work with me some other time to get me more comfortable with them?’

8.       I’m tired.  This is especially bad when you’re whining.   You don’t think your coach is tired?  She would never dream of complaining to you about it.  They came to practice with a job to do and so did you.  Besides, it’s not a very inspiring thing to hear from a skater and it doesn’t motivate the coach to work with you if you announce to them that you’d rather be home in bed.

9.     Do we have to? Yes, yes you do. Practices are planned based on the areas of improvement that the group needs. Roller Derby is a constantly evolving sport. It is highly unlikely you have mastered the skill to perfection. If it is too easy, challenge yourself. Get lower, stop faster or work on form. Basics are important for everyone to work on, weather you’ve been skating for 10 days, 10 months or 10 years.

10.       I can’t.  Never say it! This phrase is code for one of three things: I don’t want to, I don’t have the courage to try, or I haven’t figured out how yet.  When skaters say ‘I can’t,’ it’s more than just verbal, it’s mental.  As a skater, if you tell yourself, ‘I can’t,’ then quite literally you won’t.  You are limiting your own potential when you use this phrase and I will never ever accept that.  Roller Derby is about pushing your limits and doing things that you never realized you could
