Monster Mash Bout: Support Anti-Bullying & Roller Derby
We may battle it out on the track, but we never bully each other! Come watch the DracuLadies take on the ApocaLips in Monster Mash and help in the fight against bullying. A portion of the proceeds will benefit the Don’t Be a Monster Anti-Bullying campaign. For the Horrors, this organization combines our love for horror and our desire to end bullying. It’s a match made in heaven!

What is Don’t Be a Monster?
Don’t Be A Monster is a national anti-bullying campaign founded in 2012 by Imagine Better, Inc. Our mission is to educate youth about the effects and consequences of bullying through creative media and captivating presentations. We focus on the choices a student can make when it comes to bullying, and how it will impact their lives as well as the lives of those around them. Don’t Be a Monster partners with local area haunted houses to run the campaign. Our local frightmasters at Headless Horseman run the local campaign for our area.

Recap Artist Soap Box Derby 2014
We told you about the Kingston Artist Soap Box Derby and if you didn’t come out to see it you sure missed a great time (check out the Freeman article)!!

While Soap Box Derbies have been around since the early 1930’s, what you get in Kingston is a lot different than your basic Soap Box Derby. Since 1995 George Donskoj and the town of Kingston have hosted their version of a Soap Box Derby that allows entrants to build whatever they want, showcasing their artistic abilities with only one rule or restriction, it must be able to stop at the bottom of the Broadway hill. Over the years it has become world known; so you can only imagine how honored we’ve been to be involved with it since 2006. Whether volunteering as “gravity control” or racing our own “Quad Skate” down the hill, it has always been an exciting event.
With 14 cars this year, it wasn’t about who got down the hill the fastest, it was about creativity, and a wide range of different themes were on hand. As we waited on the start line with all the other cars I was in awe at some of the ideas that people came up with. Between a “UFO” and a “poodle on a rotating platform”, to a “Back To The Future” Deloren car made from cardboard, I knew we were going to “skate” down that hill faster than anyone. Waiting on each entrant I grew more and more excited for our turn. When they called #12 my pilot “Suitor” and I each gave the nod and we were off. What a rush it was racing down that hill, people cheering and clapping, taking photos and videos, the excitement was deafening. As nervous as I was, once we got started nothing has ever compared to the thrill of that ride!! Though it only lasted less than 3 minutes, I’d have to say it was the best fun I’ve had since a kid racing my little brothers Big Wheel down the biggest hill in our town.
While the “My Little Broney” soap box was full of unicorns, glitter, bubbles, and a personal favorite, our “Quad Skate” won a cash Grand Prize of $500 for the People’s Choice Award – we were so honored. Looking forward to next year, we donated some of our winnings back to the race coordinators and left thinking of perhaps a few new ideas for the 2015 race.

A Letter to the Horrors from Ocean State Job Lot
The Horrors love to make appearances in the Hudson Valley. Recently we were at the grand opening for Ocean State Job Lot on Rte 9 in Poughkeepsie (so psyched they have come to the area). They let us skate around inside and outside the store and help hand out food samples and other giveaways. On top of that, they donated an entire truck of food to the Food Bank of Hudson Valley.
We received a very nice letter from Ocean State Job Lot PR Consultant Betty Galligan that we wanted to share.
Thank you and to all of the Horrors girls who participated in our Job Lot Grand Opening event! Attached are some photos for you to enjoy.
We could not have been more pleased with the level of enthusiasm, professionalism and help that the ladies provided. It was simply a pleasure to work with all of them. I knew they¹d be outgoing, but really was impressed with their genuine willingness to greet customers, pass out samples and flyers, and do whatever we needed them to help us with. Even carry out large parcels that shoppers bought! Amazing. They were true team members of ours for the day!!
Please convey our sincere thanks for all of their hard work and for making our Grand Opening event a truly special one.
Happy Holidays to all!
Betty 🙂

Thank you for letting us participate in the fun!

About Our featured Charity

Grace Smith House “An open door for victims of domestic violence”
A portion of the proceeds from this bout will go to raise funds and collect goods for the Grace Smith House. We selected this organization because of their mission to empower victims of domestic violence. Roller derby is about empowerment and we cannot think of a more empowering goal than putting a stop to violence. Take a moment to explore more about our charity and learn what kind of work is happening in our communities.
“The mission of Grace Smith House, Inc. is to enable women and their children to live free from domestic violence through:
- Providing shelter and apartments, advocacy, counseling and education
- Raising the consciousness of the community regarding the extent, type and seriousness of domestic violence.
- Initiating and taking positions on public policies in order to provide options, which empower victims of domestic violence.
Grace Smith House is a private not-for-profit domestic violence agency, which provides both residential and non-residential services to victims of domestic violence and their children.
In the late 1970’s, when the idea for the Grace Smith House shelter was born, no one envisioned that our organization would serve over 2,500 families in flight from their personal domestic violence horror each year. Today, Grace Smith House has grown from one crisis shelter at its inception in 1981, to two shelters, one second stage housing and our Follow-up and Non-Residential programs. Our programs provide Adult & Child counseling, Family Court advocacy, Child Protective Services, Social Services advocacy, Life Skills training, continuing Support Groups and education about domestic violence.
While we are pleased to have served and aided so many families and individuals, there is still so much more that can be done to attain our ultimate goal of “enabling women and children to live free from domestic violence”.
Besides providing a safe place, where the victims can start their healing process and work towards leading lives free from violence, our mission is to educate the community about the extent, type and seriousness of domestic violence and to initiate a public policy in order to provide options that empower victims of domestic violence.” (www.gracesmithhouse.org/about-us)
