Skater of the Month: Dodge ChargeHer

Roller Derby Skater Dodge Chargeher

What is your favorite derby position?

My favorite position is jamming because i love speed skating.

What is your best derby moment?

My best derby moment has to be when i won the MVP award at the end of last season in a game against Troy. It was totally unexpected and was so awesome!!

Worse derby moment?

My worse derby moment was this past game against Roc City. I managed to get in the box, I believe, three times in the first half…so annoying!!

Do you have any fears?

My biggest fear, and yes it’s crazy, is the dark. I don’t know why but i hate it!

How long have you been skating and what attracted you to derby?

I’ve only been on quads since 2010 but I started out on roller blades about 15 years ago. I was attracted to roller derby because it’s a full contact sport. The point of the game is to knock people down :)!

Who or what influenced your derby name?

My sister who is also on the team, Hitz & Glamour, came up with my name. After many nights of thinking of countless numbers of names she said “What about Dodge Charge-Her, you know like the car?” Due to my love of cars, Dodge Chargers especially, it just stuck.

How did you hear about the Horrors?

I work at Hyde Park Roller Magic where all the home bouts are played, so I had seen a couple of games and was determined when I was old enough I was joining the team. Also after hearing my sister and co-worker talk about how much they loved playing, I really couldn’t not tryout.

What is your dream job?

My dream job is to become a racecar driver for reasons similar to jamming, I have a need for speed!

Skater of the Month: Whiskey Lullabye

Whiskey Lullabye in action on the roller derby track

What is your day job?

I am the Logistics Director for an online retailer – basically, I get stuff from one place to another – like on the track when I get my Jammer from the back of the pack to the front – it’s all Logistics.

How long have you been skating and what attracted you to roller derby?

I am in my 3rd Season of Derby (no small feat at 43 years old!) and HVH is my 2nd League – I started with the Long Island Roller Rebels in the 2010 Season when a friend I knew outside of derby started skating and harassed me until I came to a bout – when I saw the sheer athleticism and passion that those ladies had for this sport I was totally hooked!

Besides skating, what are your other hobbies?

I have been a life long athlete – played Div I Soccer, Women’s Professional Football and have a passion for Boxing, Kickboxing and MMA – I am also a singer-songwriter – semi-retired, but I did some regional touring back in the day and have released 1 CD and have another that remains unfinished – Derby took over my life 3 years ago and I have a bit of unfinished business out there.

Do you have any tattoos or piercings?

No piercings besides my ears – but I have multiple tattoos – including my newest, a super jacked up and fierce derby girl designed and tattooed on my right thigh by HVHRD’s own Speed and Endurance Coach and all around famous (and infamous) dude – Tony Marchese

What is your best derby memory?

My first season with Long Island – we played a bout against Wilkes-Barre – at the last minute several skaters had to drop out, so only 7 of us made the trek from LI to PA and skated against WB who had a full roster of 14 – it was on a Sunday, we had all played in a full bout the night before – I skated in 90% of the jams in that bout, including every single jam in the 2nd half and we just rotated jammers and came out with the win – it was the most incredible feeling I have ever had in derby and was a test of not just physical, but mental endurance for all of us who skated – and whenever I hear a skater say she has to rest or just cant push any harder, I think of that bout and I know that we all have that in us – we just give up on ourselves too easily.

Do you have any fears?

I am most afraid of life getting in the way of my passions – There is a place for work and responsibilities – but a life without passions isn’t really a life at all…

How has derby impacted your life both positively and negatively?

Derby has renewed my faith in the power of physicality as a natural mood altering chemical – Derby makes me feel good! Period! But, derby also has it’s heartbreak because it is filled with PEOPLE – and people can disappoint you and hurt you – but they can also lift you up and they can certainly surprise you. I try to stay away from the drama and the people that seem to thrive on drama – STFU and SKATE!!

What/who influenced your derby name?

Well, no feel good, funny, risque, sexual innuendo names for me!! As most of my league-mates and friends know, I am recovering alcoholic – and Whiskey Lullabye is a song by Alison Krauss and Brad Paisley about a heartbroken couple who drink themselves to death – and that’s the place I go when I drink – it’s like putting a loaded gun in my mouth – so my derby name resonates with me why I play sports and stay healthy and on the right path.

If you were an animal, what would you be?

I would be a Phoenix as I rose from the ashes of my old life and into the kick-ass amazing life I have today!

Q:How did you come up with your derby name? Any chances you like the cereal?

A: Kaptain Punch actually helped me come up with my derby name (funnily enough)…but I do LOVE cereal.  Probably my favorite food!

Q: What are your hobbies, besides roller derby?

A: You know, baking, eating, playing outside…that sort of thing

Q: Any tattoos or piercings?

A: I have three tattoos, and my nose and ears are pierced.

Q: What is your dream job?

A: My dream job would probably be getting paid for doing derby actually…getting paid to skate and do all the extra work in maintaining the league I love.  I’d be so in.

Q: What would you consider your best derby moment so far?

A: Hmmm I guess my best derby moment has been scoring points in my first jam of my first bout ever.

Q: Have you had any serious injuries?

A: Nothing broken yet, knock on wood.  I guess besides a sprain here or there and bumps and bruises, it would have to be the haematoma I had recently.

Q: What was the last book you read?

A: Currently re-reading the first Harry Potter (because I’m a nerd and I love every minute of it).  But the last one completed was Mighty be our Powers by Leymah Gbowee (with Carol Mithers).

Q: Name your top three favorite bands.

A: That’s a toughy!!  I’m going to have to go with the all-time big standouts just for the sake of narrowing it down…Foo Fighters, Say Anything, and Big D and the Kids Table

Why I Love My Team

Roller Derby wheel awards from Brainstorm in Kingston

The saddest part of every roller derby season is the whistle before that last jam, when you know that this is it; this is the end, well, for now. There are many things we all do in order to appease our need for derby in the off-season; we hang out with each other, we work out at the gym, we train at Just For Kicks Martial Arts, but what makes it seem like we are actually on the track again is our End of Season Party.

A Roller Derby Party to Remember

The End of Season Party this year far exceeded my expectations from last year, or any year prior. For starters, our new batch of fresh meat (new skaters) had now graduated to “tender meat” and had played in several bouts. I could easily say they doubled our team in numbers. Lolita Lebruise graciously offered her non-derby/work-related turf for our party at Bard College. To say that Bard College is beautiful would be an understatement. Bard College is set up a lot like colleges are on TV, where its over-the-top, and unrealistic. The only difference is this WAS a real college, and the way the hall was decorated, it was more like a gala.

The decorations were beautiful-and of course “horrors” themed. Tons of silver and black tablecloths, and cute metallic red confetti adorned each table; everyone was dressed in silver, red, and black. Instead of skates, high-heels. Instead of helmets, fancy hair do’s. We were here to celebrate our achievements. There were many notable achievements this year to acknowledge: We played our first WFTDA-ranked season. This was huge. This was years in the making. When I was fresh meat, the first thing I was told is that we were working towards becoming a WFTDA league. Four years later, I played for the first WFTDA ranked Hudson Valley Horrors Team; this was our 2011 season.

Personalized Roller Derby Awards

This year, we decided to commemorate all of the skaters who have gone above and beyond on and off the track. Rxy Ramalotte, founder of HVHRD spent countless hours creating personal awards made out of old wheels, with a personal touch. The awards ceremony felt like the Oscars or the Grammys. There were presenters, and quick thank-you’s. Some awards included “deadliest shoulder check” (winner Puffy Bangs), “Most Improved Player” (Pin-Up Ghoul), “So Fast I missed Her” (Lacerated, Honey Punches Nd Gloats),  Most Points Scored in One Jam (Rxy Ramalotte), NSO Appreciation (our volunteers), Zebra Awards (to our refs), and many others.

My own victories include “most likely to fall while standing still” and “smelliest pads” (okay so I’m clumsy and I smell, but I’m only hazardous when I’m not moving…it’s a blessing and a curse). I have full confidence I can sacrifice my smelly pads award this year to other stinkers on my team, but somehow I think I will end up with the clumsy award again in 2012.  When I was handed my award, I was taken aback by how professional it looked. I expected a glittery wheel with some sort of cheesy writing on it. When I had it in my hand, not only was it cut so it would stand on a table without rolling away, but it had plastic in the middle with my name on it, the year, and the name of the award. These were created by Brainstorm Computers and Technology in Kingston using their awesome custom engraving laser technology.  These were fancy! (by the way, there was still glitter. We love glitter.)

After the awards, we went onto the dance floor, where Trixie was DJing. We danced, feasted on a vast variety of food (some vegan, vegetarian, gluten-free) and drank soda, seltzer, wine, and liquor. When it was time to leave, we were filled with sadness. Nobody wanted to leave. When you spend this much time with the same people, their presence brings a sense of comfort that I could try to describe all day, but nobody would ever quite understand. I knew that it was a mere 2 weeks until the season started and we would be back on skates, but 2 weeks was just TOO long from then. We said our goodbyes, cleaned up, and Bard began to look more like a college than a gala. We got in the car and reminisced about the night the whole ride home. “Did you see how cute so-and-so looked? How nice are these awards? The guacamole was delicious! I can’t wait for the season to start!”

Now the season has started; we have had scrimmages, various committee meetings, plans for the future. When I come home, elated, smelly, and sore, I look on my shelf at my awards. I probably look at them once a week. I’ll have these forever. I know I’m more than a stinky and clumsy person on my team. I’m quirky, and I am just one of 40 puzzle pieces that make up the Horrors. Without me, a piece is missing. Without anyone else, I’m just a puzzle piece. There is more to derby than its glitz-the tights, the skirts, the names; it’s a sisterhood. My derby sisters and I are part of something huge. We are part of the roller derby revolution. We are happy on the track. There’s nothing else to it. We are happy. Whoever said money couldn’t buy happiness has never bought and strapped on a pair of skates and played roller derby, because THAT, right there, is happiness.

Roller Derby Chant Contest

Roller Derby Chant

We Need A Chant!

The last 15 minutes before the first whistles are always the most anxiety-filled. This is when everyone gets the pre-bout jitters! Are my numbers legible on my arms? Are my pads taped? Does my helmet fit? Are my hamstring stretched enough? Did I eat enough carbs? Am I hydrated enough? It all comes down to the last 5 minutes before the bout.

We huddle, visualize success, and take turns sharing our visualizations. The national anthem is when it becomes real. As soon as this is done, we will take the track and the game will begin. The adrenaline rush at this moment is probably one of the favorite moments of bout day. The moment it all becomes real.

We huddle up for a quick chant, pivot panties on, jammer panties on, getting ready to do what we came here to do: play some roller derby! Now is our last chance to share our positive commraderie. We put our hands in, and shout, take a deep breath, and get on the track, awaiting the first whistle.

That is where you come in! Instead of our usual “HORRORS!” or “ZOMBIES!” we want to change it up! What do you want to incorporate into our special experience before the first whistle? What do you think we should huddle up and shout? It could be YOUR WORDS!

To enter the contest, post your chant as a comment on this blog.  Enter as many times as you want.  Be as creative as you want. All submissions will be voted on, and if you win, you’ll get 2 FREE TICKETS to the bout of your choice!

So what are you waiting for…chant, chant, chant!

Roller Derby Skater Senorita GonnaEatYa

A: If I could change any rule it would be to be able to bite! I mean really, sometimes during a game if you are in my way I just want to EatYa!

Q: If a derby movie was made about the horrors, who would you want to star as your role?

A: If a movie was made about the Horrors I would want Angelina Jolie to star as my role because she is so badass at action movies

Skater of the Month: R. Sovertits

Q: How did you think of your derby name?

A: After the first month of freshmeat I started thinking. 3 months later I still had no ideas neither did my friends or family. Lots of ideas but they were either taken or to close to a someone on the Horror’s or just not funny. I like British comedy. A friend came up with R. Sovertits. Sometimes people get the joke and sometimes not but when they do they give it a good laugh so it is worth it.

Q: What does your family think about the sport and the fact that you play?

A: They are very supportive. During my first bout my grandmother cornered me at half time to give me some pointers even though she has never seen a bout before and my mom sent me flowers the next day. Everyone thinks it is a unique and fun sport and they like the team.

Q:What has been your best derby moment?

A: It was really cool to win the last home game of the season year before last. My favorite moments are when we just play well together. Like magic.

Q:Any advice for girls wanting to try out?

A: Just decide to try it and do it.

Q:What are your goals for this season?

A: No airplane arms and like always endurance. Maybe my endurance is low because I waive my arms?? Eh. My goal for the team would be for us to react quickly and together.

Q:Besides derby, what are some of your other interests?

A: I really enjoy traveling-oh and sleeping. I also have a personal goal to finish a book soon. Any book would be fine.

Q:Any pre-bout rituals?

A: I like have to have all of my regular gear. I find no luck in being stinky.

Q:Who is your favorite super hero?

A: She-ra because she has a twin brother and I have a twin brother. And She-ra and I both like to kick ass. And I would one day like to have a flying unicorn.

A Letter to Say Good Luck, Not Goodbye

Roller Derby Skater Lumiknoxity

First and foremost I want you to all know that each and every one of you had made a tremendous impact on my life.  And this is by far the hardest decision I have ever had to make.

Skating has been part of my life for about seven years, and it’s only within the last three that I have fallen head over heels with it.  With everything, the whole idea of skating, the teamwork, the speed, the endurance, the atmosphere, how can we forget the god forsaken smells and most importantly, amazing and inspirational women.

You all have taught me so much both on and off the track.  On the track, I learned the importance of Teamwork, and there is NO I in team.  I learned sportswomanship, which I am still working on.  Lol and to never stop moving your feet…skate, skate, skate.  As for off the track, I have been priviledged and inspired by all of you.  You taught me life lessons of acceptance and the importance of diversity, those just naming a few.

You all have helped to shape me into a stronger well-rounded, maturing young woman who has learned to stand up for my beliefs and to be accepting of others.  Which is something I am extremely grateful for.

I am truly honored to have been a part of something so amazing and liberating.  This letters isn’t a goodbye, it’s a good luck and kick some serious ass until I am able to come back and skate with all of you wonderful, pretty, betches.

Always yours,

LuLu <3
